WELCOME TO THE BAYLISS LINE. This blog has been created for my family. By "my family" I mean all those who are related to the Bayliss family either by blood, marriage or even relationship. There are, of course, other Bayliss families not related to us but this blog has at its heart a very specific family who had their origins in Gloucestershire. I am connected to that family because my mother was a Bayliss and it was her curiosity that started my research back in the early 1990's. So, what are you likely to see on this blog? Well, as it is a blog, I want it to be as entertaining as possible rather that a dry listing of facts (that is for Ancestry.com). I will, hopefully, be posting entries on our ancestors and relatives, on the places where they lived, and the historical times they lived through. I have an extensive collection of photographs of people and places which I will, of course, be sharing.

I'd like to ask anybody who reads this blog to give me some feedback. I'd really like this to be a two way thing. It sometimes unearths new information and, to be honest, it gives me encouragement. VIRTUAL WAR MEMORIAL

 
Welcome to The Bayliss Line Virtual War Memorial. In the first part of this page we remember those members of our family and those related to us who paid the supreme sacrifice in two world wars.  As research uncovers new names they will be added.  If you know of anybody who should be added to the Roll of Honour please let me know. The second part of the memorial is called  ...And These Also Served and is a list of those members of our extended family who served in the Armed Forces in time of conflict and were lucky enough to come home. This page will be added to.
THE ROLL OF HONOUR
They went with songs to the battle, they were young.
Straight of limb, true of eyes, steady and aglow.
They were staunch to the end against odds uncounted,
They fell with their faces to the foe.
They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old:
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning,
We will remember them.

 HERBERT BAYLISS

Herbert Bayliss. Born 6 Anatola Road, Upper Holloway, 7 June 1883. Died 2 November 1918.  Served with the Middlesex Regiment in South Africa during The Boer War in 1900/01. Re-enlisted in 1915 and served in France with 185 Brigade Royal Field Artillery as Gunner 42089.  Contracted tuberculosis and was hospitalised first in France and later in England. Discharged from the Army he died at 5 Windermere Road and was buried on November 12th 1918 in grave Z16049 Islington Cemetery, Finchley with full military honours. Herbert is remembered on the Islington War Memorial in the cemetery where he is buried.
He left a widow, Esther, and seven children. Herbert was my grandfather.
AMOS HERBERT CATT
Amos Herbert  "Chum" Catt. Born Wittersham, Kent, 26 October 1891. Died 7 October 1916 at the Battle of Transloy Ridge on The Somme.  Amos was the son  of Mary Ann Paine. He was raised by his grandmother, Jane Paine Catt and his step-grandfather, Amos Catt and he took their name.  At the time of his death he was serving with The Buffs (East Kent Regiment) 6th Battalion. His service number was 8894.  He is remembered in Wiitersham Church and onthe Wittersh.am War Memorial. Amos is commemorated of the Thiepval Memorial in Picardy, France, Pier 9 Face 5D. Amos was my uncle.

                   
 Frederick Hinkley 

Frederick Hinkley was  born in Wittersham, Kent in 1894, the son of Thomas Hinkley and Sophia Holdstock. He served in the 100th battalion Sherwood Foresters (Notts and Derby Regiment. He was killed 4 November 1918, just eight days before the end of the war. His older brother, Thomas, also a serving soldier survived the war. Frederick is remembered with honour at St.Mary's Church Wittersham and on the Wittersham War Memorial. He is commemorated at the British Cemetery at Engelfontaine, France. Frederickwas my Step uncle.                                            


Kenneth Ernest Booth

Kenneth Ernest Booth was born September 1926, the son of Thomas Booth and his wife Lydia Sockett. Kenneth was serving with 11th Battalion, Parachute Regiment, Army Air Corps when he was killed at the Battle of Arnhem on 20 September 1944. Kenneth is remembered with honour on the Groesbeek Memorial, Groesbeek, Netherlands. On the memorial his age is given as 21, he was, in fact, only 18 at the time of his death 


Walter Huggins
Walter "Wally" Huggins  was born in Islington in 1887, the son of John Huggins and his wife Rosetta Corinda Rout.  He married Daisy Maud Abbotts and they had three children.  He was serving as a Lance Corporal with the 1st Battalion Middlesex Regiment at the time of his death on 28th October 1916.  Walter was my married to my grand aunt.




And These Also Served....

Other members of our family and those related to us also served in the armed forces during the two World Wars, both men and women. Others served their country in uniform at home, fulfilling vital wartime tasks. Those listed below did their bit and were  lucky  to survive the war. Dates refer only to wartime service and not to service after the end of hostilities.
